London’s Best Waffles – Mae & Harvey

The alarm had gone off a little too early for a Saturday morning. It was a cold but sunny morning as we cycled to New Spitalfields Market for some research on a little project we’ve been looking at. Having cycled back towards home we decided we had earned some brunch & it was time to head to our favourite East London brunch spot- Mae & Harvey on Roman Road.

The inside is effortlessly cool. Small but perfectly formed. Bar stools line a tiled area, behind which the team prepare the tastiest food, the smoothest of coffees and the coolest of juices, and there are other small tables to sit and take it all in. Starting with Juices, Natasha has built an Instagram worthy cafe, serving Instagram worthy food and drinks, at unassuming prices.

Matcha Latte down it was time for the main event. Having eyed up the table next to ours, we decided it was definitely the waffles we had to go for. That’s not to say the rest of the menu was any less appealing- gluten free birthday pancakes or your avocado toast upgraded with the addition of pickled lime onions, radish, black sesame seeds and a lime dressing.

I opted for the banana, vanilla cream, fresh berries and strawberry & rhubard compote (I skipped the Nutella part) waffles, fancying something sweet. MY days. There are no words. They smelt, looked and tasted like heaven. Life felt good.

Jake had opted for the no less impressive Smoked Salmon, Cream Cheese, Avocado, Chives and Lemon Zest waffles, with a side of scrambled eggs. Savoury waffles work (just look to Duck & Waffle) and I struggled to work out which were my favourite (my excuse to pick at both). Mae & Harvey

Mae and Harvey had given us the kind of start to the weekend that makes you happy to be alive, and we can’t wait to head back, not only for more incredible waffles, but to try Taco Tuesday or Laska Thursday.

Mae and Harvey- you’ve nailed it. Head there before the queues down the road begin.
